KU Debate Camp
ONLINE Debate Camp
The 2020 Jayhawk Debate Institute will be switching to an online platform for the summer of 2020. We are committed in making this transition to maintaining the high quality level of instruction to which students at the Jayhawk Debate Institute have become accustomed.
Registration Deadline June 1, 2020
We have substantially reduced the price for the 2020 JDI in order to offer the camp experience to as many students as possible in the context of the economic dislocation created by the virus. Unlike other camps we do not use the summer camp to fund our college team and Dr. Harris takes no salary from the camp so we are setting the camp at the lowest possible price.
Two week Jayhawk Debate Institute June 21-July 3: $700
Three week Jayhawk Debate Institute: June 21- July 10: $1,000
The Camp Experience
We will attempt to replicate as closely as possible the face to face teaching experience of the JDI. We will use remote technology for interactive lectures that will bring quality instruction to students and provide opportunity for students to ask questions and receive immediate feedback. We will use both small working groups and individualized sessions for students to work with our quality instructors. Students will receive guidance in developing arguments and researching affirmative and negative positions on the criminal justice reform topic. We will produce a wide range of affirmative and negative positions in preparation for the 2020-21 season. We will use online platforms for practice speeches and practice debates to give students the opportunity to advance their debate skills. The University of Kansas provides access to the most advanced online technology resources that will help ensure the highest quality online instruction.
Students attending the Jayhawk Debate Institute will have the opportunity to learn from the coaching staff and students of the award winning KU debate team as well instructors and topic experts in the area of criminal justice reform. The staff will include experienced teachers with extensive success in high school and college debate. All staff members of the Jayhawk Debate Institute are formally employed by the University for the summer and are required to undergo background checks before being hired by the camp. We will maintain a student-staff ratio of no higher than 8:1.
We are excited about the unique opportunities created by the online camp experience. It will allow us to expand our teaching and lecture staff to include resources outside of Lawrence. It will allow us to remotely provide lectures from debate experts like Dr. Brett Bricker and outside experts in the criminal justice field. It will provide students with experience in online debate formats which will be increasingly valuable in the future as the nature of debate continues to evolve in response to changing circumstances. While we hope to return to our traditional on campus debate experience in future years we are excited about the possibilities created by the online format and will strive to make it a fun learning experience for the participants in this summer’s JDI.
